January 16, 17, 18, 2009. The 145th anniversary of the actual Federal raid on the town of Brooksville and the 28th annual Brooksville Raid, Brooksville, Florida. Hosted by the Hernando Historical Museum Assoc. and North Pinellas Scout Sertoma Club. The Brooksville Raid is known as the biggest and the best Civil War Reenactment in Florida. Last year 3,850 reenactors and their families participated in the event along with 24 cannons and 61 mounted cavalrymen. Help is needed for the school day on Friday the 16th (over 1,200 students attended last year). Cavalrymen - This year the Brooksville Raid will not supply hay for the cavalry horses. In place of the hay ration, a Horse Hay-Bounty will be distributed to the cavalrymen. The bounty will be $10 per horse to first 40 pre-registered horses who participate in the battle. The hay bounty will be handled at the registration desk when the cavalryman signs in. If you did not pre-register yourself and your horse, you will not get the $10 bounty. Remember to bring your own hay for your horse - no hay will be on site. All horses and mules are required to show current coggins papers at the registration desk before the horse is allowed on the property. The event will supply tent and sleeping hay to the infantrymen. Two battles (2:30pm); one Sat. one Sun. Ladies tea will be held at 11:00am Saturday (the women put a lot into this tea and I have been told it is one of the best anywhere), Blue/Gray Ball Sat night at 8:00pm, church Sun. morning. A $2.00 donation to the event will be required for all reenactors and adult family members participating in the Brooksville Raid. All reenactors will receive a raffle ticket upon registering for a $100.00 gift certificate (five to be given away) to be used at any of the sutlers in Sutlers Row during the event. The winners will be posted throughout the camps and at the ball Saturday evening. Any and all proceeds from this event are split evenly between North Pinellas Sertoma and the Heritage Museum. Meals and hot showers will be available from the North Pinellas Co. Scout Sertoma Club, Friday evening through Sunday, for a nominal fee. Due to the incredible amount of artillery attending the Raid, the artillery bounty will be a little different this year. One bounty per unit ($100) will be given to the first twenty pre-registered cannons only. The Raid is held at the Sand Hill Boy Scout Camp on US Hwy 50. The battle is 10 miles West of Brooksville. The entrance is on Hwy 50. Take Hwy. 50 West. Go through Brooksville, keep going West about 10 miles, and look for the signs. April 17, 18 2009. Parrish Train Raid (southwest Florida). The Parrish Train Raid is definitely a one of a kind event. This a small event with two short battles per day, one at 11am and one at 2pm. Well, not really battles but attacks on the train as it passes. The train stops and is boarded by the Federals or Confederates and "captured" or the attackers are driven off by the soldiers on the train. Reenactors in period dress will be allowed to ride the train free. There will be time to interact with the public both on and off the train if you like. Artillery, Cavalry, Infantry and civilians are invited. For safety reasons we have changed the camp layout for the event. All DIRECTIONS ARE AS YOU STAND ON THE ROAD FACING THE RAILROAD TRACKS. As you enter the Train Raid area, Modern Camping, RV and trailers will be along the wood line, to the left of the road. The first modern campers on site can start at the small blockhouse in the woods and as others arrive they can work their way to the left. There will be no camping or parking from the blockhouse to the road, this area must remain clear. Please go as far left as possible so they can have ample parking for spectators and reenactors. Parking for reenactors will also be on the far left approximately 15 ft from the train track, nose in towards tracks. Union period correct camp will stay in the same place (to the right of the entrance road). Authentic confederate camp will now be where the old modern camp was under the trees, starting behind the big oak tree (south of the Federal camp). The area from the entrance road to the train station and all areas to the right will be roped off, this will be the skirmish and reenacting area. Firewood and water will be provided. Driving directions: Follow I-275 south until it hits I-75. Parrish is easy to find. From south Fla. take I-75 north to Ellenton like you are going to Gamble Plantation. Instead of turning to the west, turn east on Hwy 301 to the town of Parrish. From Lakeland, go south on Highway 37 (It dead ends in to Highway 62). Turn west or right on Highway 62 toward Parrish. When you hit Highway 301, turn right and immediately right into the Post Office. The train stop is right behind the Post Office. From Orlando, come Highway 17 south to just south of Bowling Green. Turn west on Highway 62 and take it all the way to 301. Pre-registration is appreciated but not required. For further information Contact Barry King at king75thovi@aol.com
